One of Brooklyn’s most peculiar urban characteristics are mega-block scale&#38;nbsp;sites, home to some of Brooklyn’s most controversial and monumental structures. Including highly disputed armories and neglected NYCHA housing estates, a social, formal and aesthetically sensitive intervention&#38;nbsp;has the potential to restructure the social, aesthetic, and economic image that these over-scaled sites project on the reading of Brooklyn’s urban fabric.

Altering the long established image of these sites will prompt a reaction from onlookers and visitors to reconsider the role of these mega-block conditions within Brooklyn.

Sites that were examined are currently outcasts of the urban fabric. These introverted and inward facing ‘islands’ are notoriously known for containing abject programs and underserved communities of New York City. Prioritizing aesthetics and optics, (be it a slight change in surface condition to a full on architectural intervention) these islands can be altered towards a more extroverted reading, and begin to erode the abject image of these environments.

Through making a series of photographic images and diagrammatic drawings, we aimed to challenge conventional architectural representation and presentation. By depicting a plausible alternate reality through a deadpan image-based reading of our proposal, this directly challenge the aesthetics of developer or large-scale, publicly funded projects. These projects are often depicted with predictable render-generated sun-flares, ambiguous details or surfaces, repetitive entourage, and overly vignetted birds-eye views. In other words, we wanted to create the anti-rendering, both in its process and final product, against the aesthetic&#38;nbsp;tropes that are typically associated with projects that usher&#38;nbsp;in gentrification.
Critical details and considerations while making these diagrammatic drawings or images were to deviate from the opaque drawing conventions in orthographic drawing, exclusion of architectural entourage and scale figures, and to include the ground plane in its imperfect condition - encouraging a more democratic consumption and interpretation of our proposal.

Space Oddity is a site specific installation

examining the border between illusory depth
and physical depth. The installation oscillates
between flat supergraphic and physical depth,
along with super-flats floating in physical space&#38;nbsp;as well.
The project combines tromp l’oeil techniques&#38;nbsp;found in Andrea Pozzo’s quadratura frescoes
with flat graphic patterns from the 80’s and&#38;nbsp;90’s popularized by the famed Memphis&#38;nbsp;Group.

While illusionistic Renaissance ceiling

painting and Memphis patterns seem like an
unlikely pair, the offset flat depth technique&#38;nbsp;of Memphis and Renaissance perspectival&#38;nbsp;projection come together to re-examineconventional orthographic and perspectival
architectural drawing.

DeepFakes – a combination of “deep learning” and “fake”, are images that use Artificial Intelligence based Human Image Synthesis, allowing for near seamless superimposition and mapping of images onto moving medium. These have been primarily used for facial manipulations in the movie industry, also known as FACS – Facial Action Coding System.
A recent, highly publicized example of FACS was an ad for Dove chocolate,in which Audrey Hepburn was described as being “brought back to life” through CGI after the producers were not satisfied with a Hepburn impersonator.
Using an open source code version of FACS tricked into reading architectural facades as a means of form generation.

Initial explorations test involved training the software to read one image against another, resulting in a synthesis of the two as a final product. One of the first tests involved training the software to analyze and synthesize an axonometric drawing of Eisenman’s House II and plan of post-2008 renovation of Rudolph Hall. The software was able to combine House II and Rudolph to create a quasi-axonometrick drawing of various intersecting planes.

To move into the three dimensional realm, a rotating 3D model of Michael Graves’ Portland building and SOM’s Lever house were isolated into 300 individual frames for analysis. These were selected due their similar podium style condition, yet their facade condtions are significantly different. Training for around 14 hours, resulting in a fuzzy, ambiguous volume where traits in both Graves and Bunshaft &#38;amp; de Blois’ can be found but not necessarily recognizable in the new form. Depending on resolution, FACS/GANS software can potentially be used as form finding techniques, or combined with program distribution scripts for a competely new architectural form.

The paradigm of drawing has undergone radical change and no longer provides a stable reference for the discipline of architecture. What one may think are drawings are in fact pictures of drawings or simulations of lines on a digital interface. The manipulability of these images also suggests that the act of drawing or simulation of drawing no longer constitutes an original act of creation. Combining contemporary digital image appropriation with visual neural networks contests the hegemony of traditional drawing tectonics associated with orthography.

Clicks &#38;amp; Mortar reprocesses the living room at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater through artificial intelligence and 3D texture mapping technologies. Various spatial and material qualities are maintained, while others are scrambled and interpreted by the machine learning process. Digital residues or deposits begin to drip, cascade, and flood into the interior that modify the spatial profile of the living room.

The combination of subtle and aggressive intrusions into Fallingwater’s interior challenges image-based realism—a liminal condition that corrupts yet maintains recognizable qualities of the original reference. Clicks and Mortar accounts for the ways in which the physical environment is continually mediated by its virtual existence.

		<description>Room Service

Prevailing
social conditions have pushed us into the deepest recesses of architecture’s
inside, simultaneously broadcasting these intimate spaces on screens ad infinitum
via the cloud. Our acute habitation of the interior, paradoxically, disconnects
us from the physical environment.
The American motel exemplifies this
reciprocity, where illicit activity “is at once sheltered and hidden, kept
apart without however being left in the open” (Foucault 1986). The midcentury motel
sought visual distinction in groovy atmospheres that absorbed furnishings and
architecture with blankets of shaggy carpeting and luscious cascading textiles,
all of which glisten with the waxy luster of polyurethane. The double entendre
is not lost on these vivid and highly coordinated displays where, indeed, the
carpet matches the drapes.
Today, wireless internet, flat-screen TVs, and
minibar fridges have become the motel’s primary amenities, where stylized
interiors have been relegated to social media feeds. Both material and
technological episodes emphasize the motel as an artificial construction. This
project returns these interiors to an altered object status with the assistance
of image-based neural networks and 3D texture mapping. The ancillary aesthetic
characteristics of the motel room present an alternative material artifice for
architecture to recuperate lost intimacy with the material realm.

The shift in image culture with the digital turn and the democratization of digital tools have resulted in a saturation of different variations of the same content with a single Google search.

Looking at Wittkower’s reductive Palladian plans, Evan’s ‘Translation from Drawing to Building’, and Ranciere’s ‘Future of the Image’, this project examines precision &#38;amp; accuracy (or lack there of) of architectural drawings found Online.

It is rather difficult to find a accurate drawing of Mies’ Barcelona Pavillion, a canonical building which has been traced a redrawn indefinitely. By flattening as many found plans as possible without revisions, discrepancies between drawings such as incorrect columns, dimensions, furniture sizes, scales, and wall placements are revealed.

In 2058, significant advances in diplomatic&#38;nbsp;relations between the United States, Mexico,&#38;nbsp;and Cuba have led to revisions of thei&#38;nbsp;free trade agreements to facilitate greater&#38;nbsp;economic growth of all three countries.

With significant developments in both international relations and transportation technology, a vac-train super-highway catering to passengerand freight transport links the three countries together, approximately 450 miles/725&#38;nbsp;kilometers, in segments.

In an intermediate location within the Gulf of Mexico, a floating artificial island addresses civilian traffic between countries, freight imports and exports, as well as facilities for international trade through cargo ship and air freight.

Tokyo Pop Lab enables its users to directly interact, manipulate, and influence the changing dialogue of pop culture. Given the globalization and rapid changes in trends today, the facade of this building aims to serve as a dynamic documentation of the ever-accelerating growth and influence of popular culture.

Tokyo Pop Lab’s facade condition takes precedent from the modular systems explored during the metabolist movement, and the organized chaos of vibrant vernacular signage found in Shinjuku, Akihabara, and Shibuya. Nearby brutalist/metabolist building ‘Nakagin Capsule Tower’ features interchangeable micro pod apartments, extending the lifespan of the building. Similarly, Tokyo Pop Lab utilizes an additive pod system, allowing the building to have a perpetual lifespan, constantly growing upward and mimicking the development of popular trends.

As popular trends resurface and reinvent themselves, vacuum transport tubes will connect users between similar brands or subjects, e.g. fashion, music, art, etc. Should a trend resurface a third time, the trend is rewarded with a sculptural vessel, occupying multiple pod ‘lots’, that is integrated directly into the facade fabric. All previous transport tubes will reroute into the larger figural module, as the larger vessel will act as the central hub of the trend.

Each pod represents the prevailing trend of a fiscal quarter during the year; documenting past and current trends, and possibly influencing future ones. A selection/voting process based in a smartphone app allows students and visitors of Tokyo Pop Lab – as well as the general public - to vote for the most popular trend during a three month span.

The ‘candidate’ with the most votes at the end of&#38;nbsp;the quarter will be awarded with a standardized pod, equipped with an external screen or window to represent their brand/trend/name to be seen from the street.&#38;nbsp;Pods can be occupied for a variety of uses such as a retail space, installation, information kiosk, or a themed cafe.
